The Education Research Initiative team is thrilled to bring out our next speaker in the ERI seminar series, Dr. Shanna Smith Jaggars, Assistant Vice Provost for Research and Program Assessment in the Office of Student Academic Success at The Ohio State University. Dr. Jaggars has an extensive research program at Ohio State examining topics like academic support programs, patterns of student academic progression and instructional improvement initiatives. Prior to assuming this role, she was the Assistant Director of the Community College Research Center, Teachers College, Columbia University. Her talk, Academic probation and recovery: Why do so many high-achieving students stumble during their first term at college, and what can we do about it?, will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, in the Engineering Colloquia Room (Engineering Hall 2430). This talk will discuss why students who were high-achieving in high school stumble in college, and how they experience academic probation within the context of a program currently piloted at Ohio State.

ERI Sponsors Biology Education Research Conference SABER West 2020 at UCI
The fourth annual SABER West meeting, a biology education research conference, was held this past January at UCI. The goals of SABER West include:
· Increasing interactions among STEM educators and education researchers
· Fostering collaborations between 2-year and 4-year institutions
· Providing professional development to conduct education research and implement evidence-based teaching practices
The meeting was organized by ERI Directors Brian Sato and Adrienne Williams, as well as colleagues Stanley Lo (UC San Diego), Par Mohamadian (Los Angeles Mission College) and Justin Shaffer (Colorado School of Mines). The Education Research Initiative was also one of many sponsors of the event.
UCI’s Anteater Learning Pavilion served as the weekend home for the 250+ attendees including faculty, postdocs and graduate students. Attendees heard a keynote address from Dr. Mica Estrada (UC San Francisco) focused on broadening participation in STEM careers by creating more welcoming STEM environments, enjoyed workshops geared towards active learning, statistical methods and graduate student careers, and heard a variety of talks from researchers from across the country.
